Soak in the beauty of more than 14,000 orchids from 120 varieties at Orchid Extravaganza, now on at Gardens by the Bay’s Flower Dome till 22 August 2018.
Orchid Extravaganza exudes a strong local flair with the flowers set against backdrop of colourful Peranakan “shophouses” and items such as tiffin carriers and beaded slippers, paying tribute to Singapore’s heritage.
A Local Touch
The brightly-coloured shophouse facades, reminiscent of those found in the Joo Chiat area and along Emerald Hill, act as scenic spots for photo-taking.
Adorning these are multi-coloured orchids, hung out from bamboo poles, with their roots draped down like organic curtains.
Nestled among the flowers on display are items such as oversized Peranakan beaded slippers and a display of tiffin carriers.
Frames with embroidered designs of orchids add a classic touch to the flower display.
Overhead, fluffy-looking clouds laced with orchids provide an almost fairy tale-like atmosphere.
The creative director behind Gardens by the Bay’s Orchid Extravaganza Floral Display is none other than award-winning Singaporean filmmaker Royston Tan. Through the floral display, he pays tribute to Singapore’s multicultural heritage.
Those who are interested in learning more about the Orchid Extravaganza floral display can join “ASK Me!” tours conducted at 11 am and 3 pm daily (2 pm to 5 pm on 21, 22 July and 4, 5, 18, 19 August).
Programmes and Promotions
Peranakan-themed programmes will also be held in August at the Flower Dome in conjunction with the Orchid Extravaganza.
There will be a Nyonya beading demonstration, including displays of beaded slippers, wedding collars, on 4 & 11 August. Suara Sayang, a group of singers and musicians, will be performing adaptations of songs like “Bunga Sayang” on 4 August.
In conjunction with Singapore’s National Day, Gardens by the Bay will also be offering a promotion for local residents with $5 off Singapore Resident admission rates to the cooled conservatories for purchases at the ticketing counters.
