Tonakatsu is just tonkatsu, right? At Katsu-an, the tonkatsu restaurant at Suntec in Singapore, they managed to find many different ways to vary up the deep fried cutlet dish and you would need to pay it multiple visits to try all the items.

Katsu-an is a pork cutlet specialty restaurant with 52 stores all over Japan and is now in Singapore with it first outlet at Suntec City. The tonkatsu speciality store delivers wallet-friendly food without compromising on quality. In fact, we think that it offers up great value and is a reminder why we love the Japanese versions of fast-food.

At Katsu-an, you can take a seat to dine in or order takeaway. The decor of the outlet at Suntec City is bright and cheery, reminding us of restaurants that we visited in Japan.

-- Story continues below --

There are paper menus available to browse through pictures but eventually, you can place your order using your mobile phone by scanning the QR code at the table.

There are multiple options available on the Katsu-An Menu. These include katsu dons (all-in-one rice bowls) and teishoku set menus. You can also order Japanese curry variations on the katsu dishes. Or you can choose variations that include katsu with spring onions and other sides. When we were there, they even had Tartar Sauce Chicken Katsu Teishouku.

Dining Experience at Katsu-an Singapore

We placed our orders using the QR code and very soon, our dishes started to arrive at the table.

Dining Experience at Katsu-an Singapore

We tried the Original Sauce Katsu Don. Amazingly, the medium sized version of this costs just $5.90 – cheaper than what we would pay at some food courts. The medium sized versions comes with an 80 g pork loin.

But would it be nice?

That question is easily answered. Yes. The breadcrumbs create an amazingly crispy crust around the pork loin. Was it the softest pork loin that we had ever had? No, but it was more than nice and tender.

There are other variations on katsu don available. These include Soft Boiled Egg Negi Shio Katsu Don, Triple Cheese Katsu Don, Red Katsu Don and others.

We also ordered the Loin Katsu Teishouku is just $8.90 for the regular size with 120 g loin.

Loin & Tenderloin Katsu Taishouku combination

Another order we had was the Loin & Tenderloin Katsu Taishouku combination which is $12.50 for the regular size with one 120 g loin katsu and one tenderloin katsu.

Overall, the meat was all perfectly crisp and tender. You also have the option of choosing multi-grain rice, if you prefer.

Apricot sauce

You can pour additional original tonkatsu sauce using the sauce jars at the table. There is also the choice of apricot sauce to vary up your tasting experience.

Mustard

What we recommend is to also try it with the mustard. These come in packets at the table and help to add a vinegary flavour to the bites of meat.

There are also Chicken Katsu versions available for those who prefer that to pork.

Other Menu Items at Katsu-an

We also could not resist ordering some additional dishes while at Katsu-An.

Other Menu Items at Katsu-an

We ordered the Scallop Fry and Calamari Fy. These were covered in breadcrumbs and deep-fried to a golden brown. Both were nice and we liked that the calamari had a nice bit and was not chewy.

minced pork cutlet

We also ordered the minced pork cutlet. This was huge and, like all the other items, had an impressively crispy coating. Biting into this, we loved the flavour of the minced pork with the onions. Delicious!

The minced pork cutlet is also available as a don with rice. Perhaps that is something that we will try the next time around.

Other deep fried items on the menu include chicken karaage and ebi fry.

You can also order watermelon, yuzu sobert or Hokkaido Milk Ice Cream for dessert.

Kid’s Meals at Katsu-an

Katsu-an also has kid’s meals on the menu. You can get a Kid’s Tenderloin Katsu Plate or a Kid’s Chicken Karaage Plate for just $5.90.

Katsu-an: Deep-fried Delicious Tonkatsu

Katsu-an: Deep-fried Delicious Tonkatsu

Katsu-an reminds us a lot of another Japanese fast food outlet that we love – Sukiya. This is reflected in the ordering system to the layout of the cutlery at the table. We are not sure if it is brought in by the same management, but we definitely hope to see more Katsu-An outlets around Singapore in the future.

For now, you can try Katsu-an at Suntec City.
