The ACM & ME space  also brings the Asian Civilisations Museum’s treasures to life through various hands-on activities found in its vibrant spaces.

There are a total of three thematic zones that provide a cultural introduction to the museum’s collection. It also serves as a starting point for families to head out into the museum to explore its galleries.

Who Am I? Thematic Zone

Who Am I?

The first thematic zone is Who Am I? Stepping inside the colourful space, kids can explore identity and creativity through artistic expression.

Who Am I? Thematic Zone

Kids can get creative using paper templates and stamps to make their own self-portraits to express their unique identity.

Once completed, they can put up their personal portraits as part of the display of a vibrant community art wall at the Who Am I? zone.

A mirrored wall and a variety of magnetic accessories can also be used by kids to piece together their own self-identity on their reflections in the mirror.

Craft activities

There are also craft activities that have been inspired by the Asian Civilisations Museum’s exhibitions.

What’s my story? Thematic Zone

What's my story? Thematic Zone

At the What’s my story? zone, kids can explore the power of storytelling through two interactive stations.

“Fantastic Creatures” takes inspiration from mythical creatures found in the galleries. Kids can create their own versions of imaginative creatures using colourful acrylic shapes in the form of animal body parts.

Then, together with parents, they can take on the role of mythical storytellers as imagine these fantastical creatures coming to life. Parents of a certain vintage may also find the overhead projectors being used for the Fantastic Creatures station to be nostalgic and bring back memories of school days.

“Everyday Stories” station

At the “Everyday Stories” station, kids can get creative and experiment with early animation techniques through a colour and spin activity with reusable silicon mats.

This activity takes reference from a Hong bowl from the Maritime Trade Gallery. The mats feature designs based on daily life in 18th-century Canton (Guangzhou), as well as scenes of the Singapore River today. Kids can colour these mats and spin them around to see the vivid colours come to life.

What can I create? Thematic Zone

What can I create? Thematic Zone

The third and final zone of ACM & ME is What can I create? This zone aims to bring people of all ages together through movement, music, and collaborative play.

outer play area

The outer play area is filled with oversized soft building blocks and cushioned flooring to create a safe environment for young children. They can make use of the soft building blocks to construct whatever comes to their imagination and it encourages both parent and child to play together as they imagine what can be in the world around them.

Dance is a central theme of the inner room

Dance is a central theme of the inner room where moving coloured lights create a kaleidoscope of light and shadows.

Dance floor with changing lights

There is even a dance floor with changing lights.

This area is inspired by the Asian Civilisations Museum’s artefacts that feature dance and provides a way for kids to relate to this common motif found throughout the museum’s collection.

Community Weaving Wall and Object Hunt Sheets

Community Weaving Wall

Located at the exit of the gallery is a Community Weaving Wall. Kids and parents can make use of the strips of cloth repurposed from unwanted clothing to reflect their feelings on the wall. Kids can use different colours to express how they are feeling based on what they have seen and done at Asian Civilisations Museum’s ACM & ME.

Object Hunt sheets

Also located on the wall are Object Hunt sheets. Created like a bingo card, families can make use of these as a guide to explore the museum and look out for different artefacts.

Getting the Most Out of a Visit to ACM & ME Kid-friendly Space

Getting the Most Out of a Visit to ACM's Curiosity Cove

This is developed in alignment with MOE and ECDA’s Nurturing Early Learners framework.

It is designed to be a space that parents can explore with their kids. There are also suggestions and prompts developed in partnership with the Singapore Association for Mental Health on how parents can engage their children and encourage reflection through the activities at ACM & ME’s three zones.

Calm Corner – a sensory-friendly space

In addition, for kids who need a break from all the play, there is a Calm Corner – a sensory-friendly space.

ACM & ME was designed by Arterly Obsessed, a local art collective founded by artists Keith and Guo Yixiu. It opens to the public from 23 May 2025.
