7-Eleven is bringing a list of new ready-to-eat Japanese food and snacks that will transport you back to the streets of Japan as part of their ongoing theme: Oishii Springtime Fun. Imagine yourself walking down the spring blossom streets of Japan and into an iconic conbini store to enjoy some treats such as Oyakodon, Oden and Matcha Lattes from the 7Cafe brand.

Here are some of the foods that we tried as part of the new range.

7-SELECT Onigiri

7-SELECT Onigiri
If you’re looking for a typical Japanese snack, the 7-SELECT Onigiri comes in various flavours such as Smoked Duck Shiso Onigiri, Soba Meshi Onigiri and Sakura Ebi Onigiri, which we tried. The Sakura Ebi Onigiri is made with sakura-flavoured rice and mixed with dried shrimp, edamame and prawn tempura. The mayo made it a savoury onigiri and it’s very delicious when heated up.

7-SELECT Oden

7-SELECT Oden
A classic staple that can be found in every convenience store in Japan, the 7-SELECT Oden has fishcakes, daikon slices and konnyaku simmering in a light soy-flavoured dashi broth. We enjoyed this and can see ourselves returning to it the next time we want a quick and light meal. They also have an Asari Clam Soup that has juicy Asari clams, shimeji mushrooms and silken tofu combined in a miso soup base.

7-SELECT Oyakodon

7-SELECT Oyakodon

Rice bowls or donburis are a classic Japanese comfort meal. There are three donburi dishes with a selection of toppings by 7-SELECT. The Oyakodon has chicken and egg which is simmered in a dashi-based sauce and pan-fried onions served over rice. We wish that there was a separate pack of sauce so that the rice would not be as dry. Other variations include a Saba Shioyaki Don, a Beef Sukiyaki Don and Omusoba.

Sweet Treats from 7-SELECT

Sweet Treats from 7-SELECT

As part of the Oishii Springtime Fun, several sweet treats are part of the 7-SELECT line of treats. There are two matcha treats that you can try including a creamy cup of Mr Softee Matcha and 7Café Matcha Latte – available hot or iced.

The matcha taste wasn’t particularly strong but it did taste like very good quality instant matcha and considering that it is pretty affordable compared to some other matcha drinks, we think that this is good to satisfy immediate matcha cravings.

Apricot Jelly and Cheese Cream Puff

There is also a special collaboration between 7-SELECT and PABLO with their Apricot Jelly and Cheese Cream Puff, which is a custardy treat filled with PABLO’s signature cream cheese and a sweet and slightly tart apricot jelly. There is also a Cheese Swiss Roll Cake with savoury cream cheese in a featherlight swiss roll cake that is made with 100% Japanese flour.
