If you’re looking for tween-approved spots in JB, I have two to recommend – Jumplah & My Player. As my 10-year-old steps into the tween years, I’ve noticed her play preferences shifting. The once exciting ball pits and colourful indoor playgrounds no longer spark the same joy; she’s craving more challenge, more thrill.

So we crossed into Johor Bahru in search of fresh, exciting experiences that wouldn’t break the bank. And we found them: two immersive light-and-laser adventures that lit up her eyes and completely captured her heart!

JumpLah: Inspired by “The Floor is Lava”

JumpLah

JumpLah at Toppen Shopping Centre is a high-energy, LED-lit arena inspired by the popular “Floor is Lava” game. The floor tiles light up in red, blue, and green patterns based on the selected difficulty level.

Your mission? Step only on the blue tiles to clear them while avoiding the red ones that simulate lava. Sounds simple… until the red tiles start shifting in from all directions, ramping up the challenge!

When the pressure mounts, green tiles act as safe zones where you can briefly recover. The ultimate goal is to complete the levels within 15 minutes.

Designed with various difficulty tiers to suit kids of different ages, the game requires a minimum of two players. But don’t be fooled, it’s more than just a runaround.

This is a full-on cardio experience that demands quick thinking, teamwork, and smart strategy. Despite the short playtime, we ended up drenched in sweat, proof of how intense and fast-paced it is.

It’s the kind of challenge that keeps tweens focused, active, and constantly moving.

In short, JumpLah offers an exciting and affordable dose of physical fun, perfect for tweens with big energy and an even bigger drive to win.

Mr Player at Mount Austin in JB is a lively, interactive play zone featuring immersive LED walls and rhythm-based challenges. Imagine stepping into a neon-lit world where glowing walls and floors respond to your every move with vibrant light patterns!

There are seven themed game rooms to explore, each offering a unique style of fun and excitement. After picking up our wrist tags and stashing our belongings in the complimentary lockers, we set off to find available rooms, ready to dive into a series of action-packed missions.

Room 1: Hide

How to play – Press the wall buttons in numerical order while avoiding the glowing red eye’s gaze. Use nearby pillars to shield yourself whenever the eye lights up.

It’s a fast-paced challenge that puts your logical thinking and reflexes to the test, as you race against the countdown and stay hidden just in time!

Room 2: Control

How to play – Jump onto the boxes to reveal a question, then choose the matching colors and arrows to progress through each level.

This game is also suitable for preschoolers, helping them practice color and shape recognition, an important skill for cognitive development!

Room 3: Flash

How to play –  Navigate through the laser maze without touching the green beams—just like a stealthy spy! It’s a fun challenge that puts your agility and problem-solving skills to the test as the laser patterns become increasingly tricky to avoid.

Room 4: Touch

How to play – Identify the odd one out from rows of lights before time runs out. The quicker you spot it, the more levels you can unlock. It’s a real challenge for your observation skills and sharp eyesight!

Room 5: Strike

How to play – Watch the flashing diagrams, spot the matching ones, and clear them by throwing a ball at them. This fun and engaging game helps tweens sharpen their pattern recognition, a key skill that supports mathematical thinking.

Room 6: Lava

How to play – Similar to “The Floor is Lava” and Jumplah, this game challenges you to clear the blue tiles while avoiding the red ‘lava’ tiles. Step carefully, your accumulated wrong moves might send you out of the game!

Room 7: Mega

How to play – This is a friendlier take on the classic Lava game where you step on colored boxes that match the colors displayed on the wall buttons. It’s a fun and interactive way to stay alert while clearing levels!

No worries if you’re unsure how to play, there are plenty of friendly staff on site who will be happy to explain the games to first-timers and offer help whenever needed.

Our family, including a preschooler and grandma, all took part and really enjoyed the experience. The hour flew by so quickly that we were all surprised when it ended! Personally, I found the challenges a bit easier compared to Jumplah, but that might be because the staff tailored the difficulty to suit our family’s needs.

In the common area, you’ll find sofas to relax on, plus a pool table and basketball machines that ticket holders can enjoy free of charge. The lockers use face recognition as your ‘key’; each time you open them, they reset to free-to-use status. Because of this, I suggest storing your valuables in the lockers but keeping your water bottles with you during play. Trolleys are conveniently provided outside the game rooms to hold your bottles.

I highly recommend making reservations before heading to any of these play spots to avoid disappointment.

Mr Player is just a short drive from Mount Austin’s popular foodie area—perfect for a fun adventure before or after a meal.

Meanwhile, JumpLah is located inside a mall, which means food and shopping spots are aplenty. I can picture this being an awesome day out if you plan it with other tween parents, maybe even visit both places in one day!

We’re definitely coming back with more friends, especially those with tweens!
