Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu: New home, same sizzle

We were invited for a lunch to celebrate this opening, and we are glad to say that the standard is maintained at this new outlet. We sampled two Signature Half-and-Half Gyukatsu Zen Sets: one with a mix of sirloin and chuck flap ($29), the other with a mix of sirloin and beef tongue ($32).

We found that the sirloin formed a solid baseline with its tenderness and juiciness, the chuck flap added more marbling and richness, and the thick-cut beef tongue combined a rich butteriness with a firm bite.
Exclusive Weekday Lunch Sets
To celebrate the opening of their Parkway Parade outlet, the restaurant has crafted a special weekday lunch set starting from $18.90. Diners may choose from two sets: the Sirloin and Yasai Gyukatsu Zen ($18.90) and the Sirloin and Salmon Gyukatsu Zen ($19.90).
The former comprises a tender sirloin cutlet paired with crispy seasonal vegetables, while the latter is a Japanese take on “surf-and-turf”. The set presents excellent value, given the high-quality ingredients and execution.

Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu
Hailing from Kyoto, Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu was founded in in 2014 and has since grown into the largest gyukatsu speciality restaurant from Japan. Diners are drawn in by their beautifully crisp, medium-rare beef cutlets with perfectly marbling.
The steaks are handpicked from choice cuts of prime beef. Each steak is coated in a koromo batter made from a secret blend golden ratio of bread crumbs, flour and egg wash. It is then deep-fried to medium-rare perfection at a precise temperature in fresh oil that’s changed daily to yield clean, crisp flavours.
The steak comes with a personal konro or traditional earthenware grill that diners can use to sear it to their preferred degree of doneness.
Cuts to Order at Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu
We recently tried some of the cuts at Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu at their One Holland Village outlet.
One of the popular sets avaialble at Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu is its Signature Half-and-Half Gyukatsu Zen set. This pairs together Sirloin with either Tenderloin, Beef Tongue, Chuck Flap, or even prized Miyazaki A5 Sirloin, allowing diners to sample different cuts of meats.
We order the Signature Half-and-Half Gyukatsu Zen set with Sirlion and Tenderloin.
The Sirloin is a classic Kyoto Katsugyu Gyukatsu cut. We bit into it and it was both tender and juicy. Apparently, this is achieved by precisely cooking the meat at a low temperature to lock in all the succulent beefy goodness.
The Tenderloin is a lean protein option and comes in a thicker cut. We always love a good tenderloin and the cut at Kyoto Katsugyu Gyukatsu was a succulent and juicy bite.
There is the option to sear the steak on the konro too.
Different Condiments to go with the Gyukatsu
Complementing the cuts of meat were a variety of condiments. There was the choice of fresh wasabi, which can be added to Dashi Soy Sauce for a hit of umami. Sansho Pepper Salt adds a slight citrusy tang. Completing the trifecta of sauces is the sweet Gyukatsu Sauce.
For more flavour combinations, the gyukatsu can also be dipped into Kyoto-style Curry or a creamy Signature Onsen Egg.
Personally, we found that the meat was so flavourful in itself that we enjoyed with some wasabi alone or with a slight dip into the Dashi Soy Sauce.
The sets come with rice (refillable), cabbage (refillable) and Aka miso soup which makes use of a red miso for a hearty aftertaste.
A5 Miyazaki Sirloin Gyukatsu
For those who wish to treat themselves, there is the A5 Miyazaki Sirloin Gyukatsu. This is Kyoto Katsugyu’s most premium Gyukatsu and features perfectly marbled Wagyu.
The A5 Miyazaki Sirloin Gyukatsu simply melted in our mouths, releasing the rich flavour of the Wagyu.
Kids Sets
There are also two kids sets available at Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu.
The Minced Wagyu Children’s Set ($12) features 100g of Minched Wagyu Beef Katsu served with Japanese Rice, Kyoto Dashi Curry, Cabbage, Corn Kernels and Orange Juice.
The Chicken Karaage Children’s Set ($9) comes with three pieces of Chicken Karaage served with Japanese Rice, Kyoto Dahi Curry, Cabbage, Corn Kernels and Orange Juice.
Non-Beef Options
There are also non-beef sets available at Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu. These include Seafood Katsu Zen ($32) featuring large, plump shrimps, fresh scallops and a salmon cutlet that is juicy and rich in fat. The seafood is coated with specially ground raw breadcrumbs for a crispy texture.
A dish that caters to veggie-lovers is the Yasai Tempura Zen ($25) featuring greens that are carefully selected and meticulously hand-prepared in-house.
