If you’re looking for something educational, indoors and incredibly immersive, Exploria might just blow your mind. Exploria is located at Mandai Wildlife East and offers a wildly immersive indoor multimedia attraction across five interconnected worlds from prehistoric eras and extreme habitats, to microscopic ecosystems and the depths of ocean darkness.
Spanning 10, 000 square metres, Exploria is one of Southeast Asia’s largest indoor nature-themed multimedia attractions.
As a mum of a teen and tween, this is probably one of Mandai Wildlife East’s must-go attractions for the family given the epic experience that is certainly educational, reflective and engaging.
Where is Exploria
Exploria is located at Mandai Wildlife East, the public area that leads to Singapore Zoo, River Wonders and the Night Safari. It is next to Curiosity Cove an indoor nature-centric playscape.
What to Expect at Exploria
Exploria is a digitally connected space right from the get-go. As you print and collect your wristbands for entry, the RFID tag on it is linked to your email address. Then the fun begins!
Prepare to be wowed at Our Interconnected World, the central hub of Exploria in a shape of a futuristic-looking dome.
Biopool: The Heart of the Hub
Get greeted by the “heart” of the hub called the Biopool which is a four-metre LED globe that symbolises the interconnectedness of humans and nature. Every discovery and every completed challenge gets channeled into the globe which recalibrates in real time.
There are also Biopool stations here for visitors to scan their RFID wristbands to customise their avatar, activate interactive installations and earn species badges as they engage with the responsive media features and find out their scores on a leaderboard. Each world features Memory Hooks or photobooths here pictures can be captured.
In addition, each guest’s profile remains active for a year. This encourages repeat visits since one can continue to collect badges and build achievements over time.
This got the adults really excited since it was like entering a phygital game. If your loved ones are the competitive sort, one challenge is perhaps to see who can triumph score-wise. At the end of the visit, scan your RFID wristbands to see which one of the three profiles you have and see the leaderboard for scores!
Compete Across Five Worlds at Exploria
To accumulate scores, enter each of the five worlds to complete as many challenges as possible.
But first, catch the four-minute light and sound show “The Planet Awakens”. The space lights up in various colours synchronised with projections, dynamic colours that capture the energy and diversity of the five worlds.
Then pick a world to enter: Realm of the Giants, Micro Worlds, Bitdeer AI Extreme Frontiers, Infinite Wonderland and World of Darkness.
Our Take on the Order of Worlds
Wondering which world to begin with?
We recommend starting with Infinite Wonderland which has the most number of challenges to overcome, followed by Realm of Giants, Micro Worlds, Bitdeer AI Extreme and finally World of Darkness.
Another protip: Each world has a Exploria-wide disruption that comes up at specific stations. Look out for it and get reminded on how we need to do our part for the longevity of our planet.
Guide to the Five Worlds at Exploria
Here’s a quick rundown of the various worlds. Spoiler alert: for those who prefer to stay in the dark about each of the worlds, skip to the end as there are spoilers ahead.
Infinite Wonderland
Infinite Wonderland celebrates the extraordinary biodiversity of rainforests and coral reefs through rich details.
First feel strong gusts of wind and rain (you won’t get wet!) mimicking the tropical storms.
Then enter dense foliage to learn about wildlife in familiar environments – tropical rainforests. Collect the calls of the wild by scanning your RFID wristbands, then climb up a vine to locate the orangutans or check out gliders in the forest, and watch the exhilarating chase of the sambar deer by the Malayan tiger.
Then time to do a thorough search of creatures camouflaged amongst their habitats using your RFID wristband. This was difficult to do in the dark, hence some teamwork and a torch might come in handy.
Finally head to the vibrant reefscapes to learn about leopard sharks, octopus, corals and more. Witness a multimedia show on coral spawning that turns the room into a magical scape under the sea.
Realm of the Giants
Dino-lovers don’t miss this prehistoric world. Come face-to-face with Mesozoic dinosaurs and colossal sea creatures.
Tap your RFID wristbands to find out more about the larger-than-life creatures right in front and take a wefie with the T-rex at the photobooth. Feel the tremors of the Argentinosaurus passing at the augmented reality window.
The centrepiece of this zone is The Giants Show. Keep your eyes peeled and grip onto the railings for this eight-minute, 60-degree theatre experience that surrounds you in visuals, light, mist, sound and motion through 500 million years of life on Earth.
Ascend towards planet Earth and then watch the dinosaurs roam both on ground and under the sea, while dramatic landscapes change ending with an asteroid crashing into Earth.
It was a phenomenal show that got everyone watching intently as the visuals transformed. The experience transported us back in time to witness the earliest giants across land, sea and sky.
Micro Worlds
Turn your attention from giants to the microscopic cells. Micro Worlds is dedicated to the unseen worlds of plankton, insect colonies, fungi and bacteria.
Interactive glass orbs display magnified microbial ecosystems such as E Coli and Chocolate Tube Slime. Roll a ball at projection domes to see invertebrate ecosystems and move your head, arms and even your behind to learn fun facts about bacteria on your body. Did you know about the bacteria on your skin that aids in skin health?
Bitdeer AI Extreme Frontiers
Ready to conquer extreme climates like some animals do? Head to some of the planet’s most challenging environments through virtual expeditions and four simulator rooms.
Learn about how polar bears navigate melting Arctic ice to Namaua chameleon thermoregulating in arid deserts and demoiselle cranes migrating at high altitudes. Experience life as a subway rat (or Ninja Turtle if you prefer that), feel the heat of the desert like a chameleon, experience 40 km/h winds like the cranes and watch the Aurora Borealis in the simulator rooms.
World of Darkness
Last but not least, World of Darkness takes you deep underground and into the deep ocean where light does not permeate. Learn the secrets of life that highlight the remarkable adaption of species such as the bioluminescent vampire squids, eyeless yeti crabs and blind cave fish.
You don’t have to be in New Zealand to experience a glowworm cave. Find out why they glow while checking out their mesmerizing lights.
Feel your way around and try looking for a recent discovery that has yet to be named. It is just one of the many mysteries of our biodiversity that we may not have all the answers to.
Watch a stunning presentation of jellyfish swimming across the life-sized screen and collect more points by answering quiz questions or playing games.
Review of Exploria at Mandai Wildlife East
The message on sustainability has been done to death but yet it is needful for all to truly mull over. In this respect, Exploria was tasteful, fun and incredibly engaging. It truly reminded me of what I can do and do act now to protect the planet from further destruction.
From the tiniest cells, to the role of bees and the most magical of biodiversity yet formally discovered, I believe the gamified experience can remind generations about the beauty of our earth and the amazing life we get to witness in all corners of the planet.
Youths and young adults can appreciate the depth of the content shared especially when they take the time to read the information presented while young families will learn much more about wildlife through interactive panels and digital presentations.
In reality, we might not be able to explore the deepest depths of the ocean, nor time travel to the Mesozoic ages, nor venture deep into jungles. Exploria makes these scenarios possible.
Without the cliché messages like “save the earth” or “don’t use plastic”, Exploria helps visitors internalise the actions through gamified challenges. In fact, it was like stepping into a real live-action game play with the NPCs being the animals.
I left Exploria feeling empowered to make our presence a meaningful one in this amazing world. We are definitely more than just “players in a game” and clearly capable of doing our part in the vastness of the planet’s biodiversity.
