Our Review of Lily’s Magic Pockets
The picture book reminds me of a patchwork skirt that my grandma sewed for my mother, then later passed on to me. It reminds me of the fond memories of my grandma who sewed and similarly listened to my stories and chatter about life.
It is a sweet story that reminds readers of their loved ones and conversations that might serve as precious memories. Lily certainly put her pockets to good use – cheering her grandma up and quickening her recovery while also sharing all her tales with her family like a happy pill that is like a balm that bonds and heals.
While I didn’t have the magic pockets to store my favourite things, I do remember the hobbies my friends and I had. Whether it was collecting stickers in sticker books, stamps, colourful rubber balls, country erasers, those were an essential part of childhood everyone relishes.
The book will delight all children and their families who can reminisce their youthful days and also be inspired by Lily’s love for her family.
The craft and activity pages at the end of the book are also useful as a post-read activity. Perhaps the little ones can craft together with their grandma too!
Feast on the illustrations by Linda Yew too. The colourful patterns resemble vibrant prints on fabric, with little lines and crosses just like stitches. Floral and fauna is depicted in a myriad of colours and strokes, some resembling a batik print others like crayon art and water colours.
