A stall that caught our eyes is the Ju Xing Fish, a sauerkraut fish express concept by Hong Kong restaurant Ju Xing Home known for its Michelin Bib Gourmand award recognition. The Signature Sauerkraut Fish Soup with Crunchy Grass Carp bursts with aroma and served a distinctly rich broth with a generous serving of fresh fish slices, tofu and enoki mushrooms.
Another Hong Kong restaurant to note is Mon Kee Café, that brings to the table a selection of Hong Kong cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style café) flavours. On its menu is the award-winning Char Siew Scrambled Egg Rice and the popular Quartet Pineapple Bun Sandwich. We tried the Char Siew Scrambled Egg Rice. The egg texture was creamy and soft, though we personally felt that the char siew meat on the lean side.
Burger fans will be delighted to know that SMASH by BurgerLabo checked into the new hotspot in town. Brought in by Ken Loon, who is also a partner of the Singapore outlet of Mon Kee Café, the stall shares the idea to provide reasonably-priced quality food to the masses.
We had the smash burger and really liked the juicy beef patty that is complemented with a slice of melted cheese, sandwiched between crispy surface buns.
Similarly, on the trajectory of providing wallet-friendly options from award-winning brands, is the Kam’s Roast Express that is a spin-off of the one-Michelin starred Kam’s Roast from Hong Kong. On its menu are crowd favourite such as the Roast Duck Rice and Crispy Roast Pork Rice. If you would like to taste their roast meat varieties at one go, the Five Treasure Rice would be a go-to option, with roast duck, crispy pork, soya sauce chicken, char siew and salted egg.
For those craving more regional flavours, Penang Jiak brings a tasteful menu of Penang’s delights to Singapore. Known for its Assam Laksa and Crispy Pork Ban Mian at its Orchard Road outlet, the stall continues to bring food lovers on a culinary journey to the streets of Penang.
We were surprised by the unassuming dish of Char Kway Teow with Big Prawn. The char kway teow had a robust wok hei flavour captured in every savoury bite, and a medley of enormous prawns, bean sprouts, Chinese sausage slices and pork lard.
