Tempura-EN: Crisp, Classic And Playful Japanese Cuisine

There’s a simple pleasure to tempura done well: a whisper-thin batter that snaps on the bite, while the ingredient beneath still shines with its own flavour. Tempura-EN, the refreshed concept from the team behind Tempura Makino and Kohaku, delivers exactly that.

At Suntec City, it’s a welcome detour for shoppers and office crowds seeking something crisp, quick, and reliably Japanese.

Tempura-EN’s First Impressions: Casual yet Craft-Minded

Tempura-EN's First Impressions: Casual yet Craft-Minded

Located on level 2 of Suntec City, Tempura-EN fits comfortably into the bustle. Casual seating and an open kitchen let diners watch the tempuras being fried, while the menu works equally well for a speedy lunch or a relaxed dinner. The late-2025 “New Chapter” update expands the offerings beyond classic tendon and ebi tempura, introducing smaller, creative tempura bites without straying from the brand’s core focus.

Appetisers: Bright and Textural

Tomato Shikuwasa Zuke ($5.50) – Skinless tomatoes with Okinawa citrus jelly

Tomato Shikuwasa Zuke ($5.50) – Skinless tomatoes with Okinawa citrus jelly

The meal opens brightly. Chilled, peeled tomatoes soak up a lightly sweet shikuwasa jelly, delivering flavours somewhere between sour plum and summer fruit. A quiet, refreshing palate cleanser that sets the stage for richer bites to follow.

Toro Taku with Crispy Seaweed ($9) – Minced tuna with pickled radish and tempura seaweed

Toro Taku with Crispy Seaweed ($9) – Minced tuna with pickled radish and tempura seaweed

This dish is all about texture. The toro-taku mix carries a full, ocean-forward savouriness, while the crispy tempura seaweed adds a light crunch and softens the tuna’s intensity. A simple combination that surprises with its interplay of flavours and textures.

Truffle Camembert Tempura ($8) – Camembert cheese with truffle slices

Here, camembert is encased in a crisp, light shell and finished with truffle. The cheese itself is mild, while the truffle aroma adds an indulgent touch. The warm, soft centre against the crisp coating makes for a comforting, easy-to-enjoy bite.

Prosciutto Asparagus Tempura ($9) – Asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, topped with shaved parmesan

The asparagus is lightly coated in tempura batter, still bright and snappy inside, with prosciutto wrapped around it for a savoury hit. The parmesan adds visual flair more than flavour, but the dish remains fun, approachable, and camera-ready — a playful take on modern tempura.

Carpaccios: Light and Fresh

Carpaccios: Light and Fresh

Truffle Hamachi Carpaccio ($15) – Amberjack sashimi with sesame-truffle sauce

The presentation is rustic, but the flavours are subtle and refined. The truffle in the sesame sauce is faint, and the dish could work just as well with sesame alone for a richer colour. Thin onions add a crisp, lightly sharp finish that lets the hamachi shine.

Salmon Ikura Carpaccio ($10) – Salmon sashimi in sweet-tangy sauce with salmon roe

A light, refreshing palate reset between fried dishes. The sweet-tangy sauce is familiar and easy to enjoy, reminiscent of casual izakaya carpaccios. Simple, bright, and clean, it refreshes the palate before returning to richer flavours.

Mains: Hearty and Comforting

Kaisen Hitsumabushi ($28) – Akaebi, maguro, salmon, baby scallop, negitoro, kyuri, hamachi, tobiko with in-house taidashi and tai goma carpaccio

Kaisen Hitsumabushi ($28) – Akaebi, maguro, salmon, baby scallop, negitoro, kyuri, hamachi, tobiko with in-house taidashi and tai goma carpaccio

The highlight of the night, this dish turns eating into a little adventure. Inspired by Nagoya-style hitsumabushi, it arrives with a colourful seafood mix and three ways to enjoy it.

The house-made seabream broth is fresh, fragrant, and surprisingly light. Pour it over the rice and seafood, and the gentle heat softens the fish to an ochazuke-like texture.

Each spoonful combines fresh seafood, subtle sweetness, and comforting warmth — playful, thoughtful, and deeply satisfying, showing Tempura-EN excels beyond just crisp tempura.

Special Tendon & Soba ($26.50) – Prawn, squid, maitake, eggplant, pumpkin, French bean & egg with half rice, half soba

Special Tendon & Soba ($26.50) – Prawn, squid, maitake, eggplant, pumpkin, French bean & egg with half rice, half soba

A comforting return to classics. The squid is tender and perfectly cooked, while the tempura egg, with its flowy yolk, adds richness. Paired with cold soba, it’s a satisfying main that is familiar, comforting, and hits all the right notes.

Final Thoughts: Tradition Meets Creativity

Tempura-EN’s expanded menu shows a team confident in both tradition and playfulness. Fresh, bright starters, creative tempura bites, and the standout kaisen hitsumabushi make for a memorable meal. For anyone looking to mix classic Japanese comfort with inventive twists, this is a stop worth making at Suntec.
