We had a respite from the city hustle and bustle for a weekend of rustic charm and fresh air at Talula Hill Farm Resort in Kluang, Johor, Malaysia. Nestled in lush greenery and rolling, terraced hills, Talula Hill Farm Resort offered our family, and groups of friends with whom we had travelled with, a unique opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect — with nature and one another.

Driving into Talula Hill, the scenery transformed quickly into calming countryside views. The first thing I noticed was the seemingly “manicured” terraced hillside. That filled me with excitement for the children to explore the bountiful nature on Talula Hill’s premises.

Set in the foothills of Gunung Lambak, Talula Hill Farm Resort offers guests an opportunity of a farmstay, but it is in fact a vibrant fruit, vegetable, and animal farm set against the backdrop of mountain peaks.

We had first purchased their organic box of hand-picked vegetables a year ago, and this trip had been meaningful to connect-the-dots from our purchase to the farm where the vegetables had been grown in.

Located 1.5 hours easy drive from Singapore, Talula Hill is centrally situated in the Malayan Peninsula and blessed with mineral-rich clay soil and organic deposits from the Lambak forest. These terraced hills offer a nourishing environment for thriving crops and deep-rooted trees.

We stayed in one of their nature-facing Deluxe Cabins—a cozy, rustic space with simple furnishings, high ceilings, and large windows that frame the surrounding greenery. We noticed one or two spots of cracked, peeling paint on the wall, a small tear in the drawn blinds, but otherwise, the room was well-maintained.

What We Loved at Talula Hill Farm Resort

1. Nature Connection for the Kids

M and the husband went on a guided tour along with friends to explore plants in the vegetable farms and feed goats at sundown while m took a sound two-hours nap in the room.

If we had more time at Talula Hill, we would have tried our hand at fishing in one of Talula Hill’s ponds, as well as take a dip in the mountain water at the Grotto by the lush greens of Lambak Forest.

2. Comfort in Nature

While it’s not 5 star hotel quality, the stay in Talula Hill Farm Resort’s cabin was comfortable. I was overjoyed to see a ceiling fan in the air-conditioned suite, which keeps the room windy and well-ventilated, a huge welcome for my heat intolerant eczema kids.

There are even thoughtful details like umbrellas and a rattan bag for guests to borrow.

I was initially worrying about limited food choices, but it turns out the farm cafe has a good menu of hearty, delicious dishes made with homegrown produce and local ingredients.

Dinner at the farm café was very decent, with a few standout dishes.

For those who prefer a more hands-on dinner approach, BBQ sets (food, cutleries, charcoal etc) are available at a per pax rate. Pre-ordering is required. There are BBQ pits for rent, and this is a nice option for families who would like to bond over cooking, while children play in the grounds nearby.

To get around the premises, the staff is happy to take you on complimentary buggy rides. This became a highlight for my children, who enjoyed the windy, bumpy rides up and down slopes.

3. Complimentary Art & Craft Session

In the afternoon, after we checked into our room, we brought the children to the communal gathering place for open-ended art and craft. It wasn’t a workshop; we referenced the samples to make “Monster Plates” and “Painted Wooden Plaques”.

Art and craft supplies like acrylic paint, brushes, paper plates, straws, blank wooden plaques were provided.

4. Communal Play and Connection

After dinner, families gathered at the spacious communal area, where board games like Jenga, ping pong (bats provided), and table soccer were available.

This was also the site of daytime arts and crafts sessions and offered a warm space for cross-family bonding into the night. There is also an outdoor swimming pool for families to have some water fun.

5. Base for Exploring Quiet Kluang Town

Talula Hill provides day tours to nearby Kluang attractions like the Kluang Railway Cafe, to buy famous tau sar piah (pastry) etc at additional rates. We chose to go slow and on our own, eventually returning home with a bag of famous Kluang coffee.

Connectivity may be limited

We didn’t experience issues with Wi-Fi but I have heard reviews of spotty Wi-Fi. I guess the lack of connectivity is also part of the charm—it invites you to be fully present.

Bring sealed containers for food

On our last day, we noticed ants in our room, likely attracted to the ripe fruits we brought with us. Keeping them sealed would have helped.

Houseflies are part of the countryside vibe

The communal gathering space, had houseflies—common in tropical farm environments.

Be weather-ready

Bring mosquito repellents for outdoor activities.

Final Thoughts

A farmstay at Talula Hill Farm Resort was more than a vacation—it was a reset button. For families craving open skies, slower rhythms, immersion in nature, this hidden gem in Kluang is worth the detour.

We left with sun-kissed skin, and full hearts rejuvenated in nature’s tranquility.
