A Tour at the Hyundai Center
Arriving at the Hyundai Center, we first checked in at the reception counter at the swanky lobby.
To join a tour, you will need to make a booking in advance through the Hyundai Center’s website. The tour starts on time, so it is advisable to be early.
An Introduction to the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore
Starting at a large screen, we met our tour guide for the day, who gave us an introduction to the Hyundai Group.
Most of us are familiar with Hyundai because of its cars. The building where the tour is held is also the factory where Hyundai’s IONIQ electric vehicles are assembled.
We made our way past a display of electric vehicles and headed to the IONIQ Lounge.
The IONIQ Lounge provides a showcase of the various options in terms of colour and fittings that are available for the IONIQ Lounge.
It almost seemed like a sales showroom, but our guide quipped that anyone interested in purchasing the vehicle would need to make their way down to Alexandra instead.
However, there was merchandise made from Hyundai parts on sale at the IONIQ Lounge.
Smart Farms
Hyundai does more than just make cars in the building. The next segment of the tour showcased how the group is tackling food security and self-sustainability.
Smart Farms occupy a large part of the lobby. There are towers of vegetables being grown at these Smart Farms.
Our guide pointed out to us the Seeding, Growing, and Harvesting Zones. One of our tour group even got to use a robot to plant a seed.
While robots do a lot of the planting work, harvesting is done by hand. We were led to a room where we had a chance to harvest the vegetables for ourselves.
After a quick demonstration by our guide, we harvested the vegetables for ourselves. We were also able to package it to bring home later.
Tasting Session
After harvesting the greens, the next part of the tour was a tasting session!
We made our way to the third floor, where a selection of vegetables was laid out at individual seats at a bar counter. There are nine types of vegetables grown at the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore, and we had the chance to sample seven of them.
The green leafy vegetables presented ranged from Romaine Lettuce to Mustard. At first glance, they all looked like lettuce to us.
We were in for a surprise because they tasted remarkably different!
There were tasting notes under each of the vegetables in the accompanying tasting menu, but there was nothing like tasting them first hand. The Ice Plant and the Sorrel were the most surprising to us with its salty and tangy taste, respectively. The Mustard lived up to expectations with its fiery peppery kick.
Factory VR Tour
From edible greens, we moved on to green vehicles! It was time for the Factory VR Tour.
This was the most secretive part of the tour and photos were not allowed. Instead, we sat down on a comfortable chair, strapped on a VR headset and were taken on a virtual factory floor to see how the IONIQ electric vehicles are made.
The VR experience was quite impressive and included interactive segments where we had to lend a hand to assemble the vehicles.
There was a surprise at the end of the VR experience too!
Do note that participants who are unwell or young children are advised not to take part in the VR factory tour due to the highly immersive nature of VR environments.
Skytrack Experience: Ride in a Car On the Rooftop Test Track
After the VR experience, we reached the highlight of the Hyundai Center tour – a chance to ride in an IONIQ vehicle.
We headed up to the rooftop and, after signing a waiver, were led to a holding room to wait for our turn to ride in an IONIQ electric vehicle.
The Skytrack at the rooftop of the Hyundai building is 620 metres in length. It is normally used to test the cars once they have been assembled and before delivery to the customer.
In groups of three, we got into the car and the driver took us around the track twice. With a steep banking angle, it was an exhilarating ride and this was the highlight of the Hyundai Center tour experience!
Do note that participants under 135 cm cannot take part in the Skytrack experience. For safety reasons, the Skytrack Experience will also be suspended in the event of rain or if the track is not completely dry.
