#BuySingLit goes bigger to promote
Singapore Literature in 2019
Grab lunch and bond over Singaporean literature with a writer or get snippets of SingLit on-demand from a story machine – these are just some highlights of the over 80 programmes at #BuySingLit 2019. The third edition of this movement to promote Singapore literature promises to be its biggest yet, with the addition of an extra weekend of activity that will be held from 8-17 March 2019, which will cast a spotlight on unique programmes offered by various local publishers, retailers and non-profits.

Come, Let’s Act encourages participants to appreciate Tamil works by local Tamil writers such as P Krishnan, Kannabiran, Latha and more. Using performance techniques, the participants will breathe life into local works by performing them in this 12‐hour programme (6 hours per session).

Hello SingLit! x Arts In Your Neighbourhood

The story that will be staged is Pisang Popular (The Popular Banana) from the Siri Bacaan Cekap Kanak-kanak (Confident Reader Series). Children will get to meet life-sized banana characters from the book and interact with them on-stage through role-playing. They will play word games, find out the different types of bananas used for different dishes, and learn simple Malay phrases while helping the banana characters solve their problem.
This performance will be performed in Malay. More info.
Creating A Fictional Universe

Dive into the weird and wonderful mind of author, illustrator, artist, sculptor and creator David Liew. Where do the ideas for his quirky Nightmare on Eat Street characters – Zombie Kroobi, Crankshaft (haunted suit of armour), Rufus the Werewolf, Dribbl the Goblin etc – come from? How does he create coherent fictional universes? Find out as he reveals them. More info.

This interactive session, geared to encourage children’s curiosity and artistic expression, begins with a storytelling session by author Nur-El-Hudaa Jaffar about a group of small creatures living in the garden. This is followed by Art instructor Nurbakyah Md Shaw teaching participants to decorate their own special tote bags. More info.

In conjunction with the Chinese Reading programme in schools, Lingzi Media will invite well-known authors to participate in I Love SingLit Reading Carnival. The activities will include meet-the-author, sharing and storytelling sessions, a book fair to promote local Chinese books for children and young adults and more. Teachers and Parents will be invited. Participants will receive a reading bag. More info.
Legend of Bukit Merah – An Intergenerational Adaptation

Jeffrey Tan, an experienced theatre director, will lead seniors and kindergarten children to explore the themes in the legend of Bukit Merah. Using found objects, the participants will present the story at Kampong Admiralty. More info.

By integrating reading advocacy and language learning into a real-life room escape game, SingLit Xcape provides participants with a multi-dimensional scene to create an alternative reading atmosphere. Filled with experiential activities that encourage active participation, this programme will open up students’ reading space. Through exploring clues and solving puzzles, it will spark one’s interest in learning and reading.
