We had a brilliant tasting, as one would expect, from Chef Heman’s  American Mass Hall located at the ground floor of Lumiere located in the Central Business District (CBD). Unpretentious, well-executed American food with bold Asian flavours that hit the spot and more!

There are several must-tries on the menu such as The Octopus ($22), Chilli Crab Mac & Cheese ($18) and The Burrata Lava Cheesy Wonderland Lovers Pizza ($24).

Meats such as BBQ Iberico Prime Ribs ($42), Angus Beef Short Ribs ($31) are also highly recommended.

When we visited, we were presented with an array of new dishes that had been added to the menu and were ready to dazzle the senses.

Buffalo Wings – Crispy and Spicy or Very Crispy and Spicy

Buffalo Wings – Crispy and Spicy or Very Crispy and Spicy

You get to choose a more traditional textured Buffalo Wings or an extra crispy version that you can dip into some BBQ sauce on the side. The wings were phenomenally crispy and I have to admit, crispy+ versions of things are my weak spot.

The Buffalo Wings were moderately spicy, and the BBQ sauce helped temper the heat. It was a great starter and a sign of things to come!

Would also love to see more choices of dips available to choose from, such as a blue cheese or ranch dip.

Ramen – Heman shows He can

Ramen – Heman shows He can

We tried the Chicken Ramen Collagen Soup as well as the Spicy Pork Jowl Ramen (Dry). They may be unexpected items on the menu in an American-style restaurant but are apparently popular amongst the office crowd who come for lunch. It was a showcase of  the versatility and capabilities of Chef Heman and the rest of his kitchen.

The al dente ramen noodles bathing in lip-smackingly rich collagen soup, the juicy chicken with a still crispy crust placed on top, a sous-vide soft-boiled egg for added richness and seasonal vegetables for nutrition and texture made for a comforting bowl of goodness not any less satisfying than a Japanese Ramen joint.

spicy, dry version with pork jowl

The spicy, dry version with pork jowl was also full of flavour, tasting like a very elevated bowl of pork noodles that is different, yet up there with some of the best you can get from our hawkers.

Crispy Prawn Paste Chicken Sandwich and Nam Yu Pork Sandwich

Crispy Prawn Paste Chicken Sandwich and Nam Yu Pork Sandwich

These are not your teeny itsy bitsy sandwiches you have on the go or have for a quick, light snack. They are full-on sandwiches with either a Fried Prawn Paste Chicken thigh or a Nam Yu (fermented red beancurd) flavoured Pork cutlet.

Both worked well in their respective sandwiches with the greens, sauce, egg in a panini grilled sandwich bread.

The accompanying achar was refreshing and crunchy and obligatory fries were good too. The better fried potatoes, however, came as accompaniment on the next dish, the 4-Day Aged Young Pork Tomahawk.

Tomahawk of Pork

Tomahawk of Pork

The tomahawk cut is a typically thick-cut bone-in ribeye steak. This time we are getting a pork tomahawk in BBQ sauce served with coleslaw, pineapple, salsa and potato wedges.

Described as an untrimmed 650gm BBQ Young Pork Tomahawk that’s been aged for 4-days, it promised flavour beyond measure, and it definitely delivered.

The pork was juicy and tender, coated lightly with the BBQ sauce that did not overpower the natural flavour of the pork.

The coleslaw was one of the better ones I have had in a while and the potato wedges were so crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. Ask for some ketchup to dip them in – so good.

Wide variety of thirst-quenchers and liquid treats

Coffee, teas, juices and soft drinks, including a root beer float that I just had to have with these dishes.

There was also a good variety of draught beer, liquors and wines as well as champagne that the well-stocked bar had to offer. American Mass Hall also recently introduced an OMG Beer, a probiotic wheat beer.

Really Good Desserts at American Mass Hall

Really good Desserts at American Mass Hall

There were only three desserts and gelato to choose from but after trying all three, it seemed to me, the next time I come, I have no choice but to order all three. They were all really good!

The tiramisu delivered ladyfingers soaked in full-bodied espresso coffee, covered in a cloudlike creaminess that is the mascarpone was miles better than the majority of the generic tasting ones you can find elsewhere.

The cempedak flavour and fragrance permeated Crème Brûlée Cempedak but never came across as pungent or overpowering. The balance was perfect against the gelato, creamy custard, caramelized sugar and the extra bit of fun from the popping candy.

Finally, the Deconstructed Apple Crumble featuring tender baked green apples that are slightly tart in a rich, deeply cinnamon-spiced sauce, mixed into buttery, soft crumble and topped with smooth vanilla gelato was just a very good rendition of the apple crumble pie.

Promotions and Other Reasons to Go to American Mass Hall

Executive Set Lunches, Happy Hour from 2 pm to 7 pm, bank discounts such as a 15% discount with OCBC, Trust and DBS/POSB cards are the icing on the cake that is American Mass Hall. You don’t need a reason to go there other than the food is really good, but now you have no excuse not to.
