Located within Serene Centre along Bukit Timah Road, the Peh Gao Coffeeshop and Orh Gao Taproom share a dual personality. During the day, the space operates as Peh Gao Coffeeshop, a modern interpretation of a coffeeshop serving breakfast and lunch. Then, from 5 pm onwards, the space turns into Orh Gao Taproom and becomes the neighbourhood’s go-to craft beer bar.
Peh Gao Coffeeshop and Orh Gao Taproom at Serene Centre
Peh Gao Coffeeshop / Orh Gao Taproom occupy a space that is a couple of doors down from its original location at Serene Centre.

It is now located at the side of the building. This allows it to have both indoor (45 seats) and outdoor (30 seats) seating areas.
In case you are wondering, the name Orh Gao (黑狗, hēi gǒu) is a Hokkien moniker for stout beer, a term used in coffee shops across Singapore. This connection is now made even clearer with its Peh Gao (白狗, bái gǒu) personality in the daytime.
Peh Gao: Modern Coffeeshop Experience
Operating from 8 am to 3 pm, Peh Gao is a laid-back, modern space designed for solo breakfasts and casual lunches.
The breakfast menu centres on coffee shop staples. These include Kaya Butter Toast ($2.80+), alongside other toast variations and a range of open-top sandwiches.
Amongst the open-top sandwiches are choices such as Tuna Melts, which we tried during a visit. Priced at $8+, we were slightly underwhelmed by it, but there are other open tap sandwiches available such as the Egg Mayo ($5.50+) and Chicken Floss ($5.50+).
From 10 am to 2 pm, the menu expands to include noodle and rice dishes like nasi lemak and chicken curry.
We tried the Vietnamese Pho Original ($13+) which had a lighter broth than most local versions. It had quite a generous portion of grass-fed Australian beef chuck.
For those seeking something more, there is the Pho Ultimate ($19+) which includes a whole braised beef rib.
Another dish that we tried was the Pork & Mushroom Udon ($12+). This dry noodle dish came with pork and mushroom gravy along with an onsen egg and fried beancurd skin. This reminded us of the noodles at Umai and was a modern take on the usual coffee shop bak chor mee.
For rice lovers, there are dishes such as Nasi Lemak Rempah Chicken ($12+), which features boneless chicken thigh in a housemade rempah paste, as well as Nasi Lemak Har Cheong Gai ($12+), and Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang ($15+), made with slow-cooked beef.
Orh Gao Taproom
From 5 pm till late, Orh Gao Taproom takes over with a weekly rotating selection of 14 beers on tap featuring crisp lagers, IPAs, sours, stouts and seasonal releases from local and international brewers alike.
The rotation also includes beers available exclusively at Orh Gao in Singapore, imported directly from overseas breweries not typically carried by local distributors.
There are also small plates like Crunchy Chicken Cartilage ($12++), Har Cheong Gai ($15++), Gao Vinegar Fries ($13++) and Tofu Dip + Wanton Chips ($11++) available.
Large plates include Curry Mussels ($21++), cooked in sambal butter, OG Beef Rendang ($22++) made with Angus beef cheek and rice-based dishes like Crab Fried Rice ($19++).
Programming at Orh Gao
Patrons can also look forward to programming at Orh Gao with regular events such as Monhtly Stand-Up Sundays featuring rotating line-ups of comedians in collaboration with East Coast Comedy, alongside kitchen takeovers.
