Dining Spaces for Families and Friends at Guoco Midtown II
The restaurant can be easily located upon arrival at Guoco Midtown II, as it is next to the Bugis MRT Station Exit D and near the drop-off point.
The space is designed into a layout of spacious open sections with different configurations of table settings to accommodate various diner group sizes. We were able to get a cozy corner to ourselves ceiling-to-floor windows, which made it a very relaxing setting. We noticed many large groups of families and friends, which filled the place with vibrancy, and showed its popularity for large group gatherings.
Pang Pang’s One-Pot Meat and Seafood Casseroles for Sharing
Pang Pang’s signature menu items are its one-pot meats and seafood casseroles. We tasted the Signature Crab Pot that featured two sizeable crabs stir-fried in a blend of crab butter and spices, as well as the Shrimp Paste Bowl and the Silken Tofu with Century Egg.
The Signature Crab Pot portions were very generous and enough for sharing by 3-4 adults, when coupled with one to two other side dishes. It tasted very savoury, and could be a tad heavy for those who prefer organic flavours. The restaurant thoughtfully prepared gloves for our use, so that we could roll up our sleeves and dive into the crab meat full on.
The Shrimp Paste Bowl was a new addition to the menu, so we decided to get adventurous and gave it a try. It was too oily for us, and we had to intersperse bites with sips of water.
The Silken Tofu with Century Egg was a nice contrast to the crab meat pot with its soft and silky textures. It was not too spicy and the light spicy overtone gave a gentle kick to the dish.
Personally speaking, the crab pot was a rich and ambitious centrepiece on its own, and the Silken Tofu with Century Egg which could potentially hold its ground as a standalone dish at a slightly larger portion, seemed very much overshadowed. We would recommend going for the seasonal vegetables instead, as a complementary dish to the pot.
Bonus Recommendation: Chicken Wing Pot
On a return visit, I decided to try a different pot, the Chicken Wing Pot, and this time we came out much more satisfied. We added enoki mushrooms and stem lettuce to the pot, which turned out to be a good choice as they added an aromatic fragrance to the overall palate of the pot, without being dominated by the meaty flavours.
The chicken wings were braised well, where the meat was soft and tender. The enoki mushrooms soaked in the rich broth were a delight and gave a pleasant balance to an otherwise sinfully indulgent hearty dish. The stem lettuce was also a tasty touch to the dish, and we practically wiped out the pot!
Pair your hearty meal with drinks – Pang Pang’s Signature Ice Tea and the Tamarind Ice Tea are refreshing reliefs to the strong flavours of the pot and casseroles. The refillable red date tea is an affordable and friendly option for those looking for warm drinks.
