On a recent trip to Johor Bahru, we spent a lovely day at Fanpekka, an indoor playground on the second floor of AEON Mall Tebrau City. This Finnish-themed playland stood out to us for how thoughtfully it was designed—not just for movement, but for creativity, role-playing, and socialisation.
Creative Home-Building Play at Fanpekka
One of our favourite experiences was the home-building activity at the Assembly Leikkimokki area.

The activity has three parts:
- Build: We started by selecting colourful wooden wall panels and slotting them into grooves to form our house. It came as an empty frame, so it felt like we were constructing it from scratch. For children who prefer open spaces, there are play tents available too. My daughter turned a tent into a “backyard shed” for her sibling, parked next to her house.

2. Design: Once the walls were up, my daughter decorated the exterior with child-sized curtains and flower pots.
OPEN HOUSE: Discover first-hand the British Council’s teaching methods and meet their approachable Academic team on 14 & 21 June
GIVEAWAY: Stand a Chance to Win S$100 iShopChangi Vouchers
3. For interior furnishing, she added dining chairs, a play kitchen, a TV console, shelves, and even a mini bathtub.
Play: When she was ready to host, my daughter invited me in for tea.
We ate an assortment of cakes off Hape wood trays. The toys at Fanpekka are mainly wooden, a number from quality toy maker Hape. Do note that some of the wooden toys look worn with some paint that has peeled off, probably after lots and lots of play time.
There are even child-sized scooters for children to zoom from house to house and “visit” one another.
This is a popular zone but there are rules to keep things organised and fair – each family collaborates on 1 playhouse. On busy days, staff may reset any unused home after 15 minutes of inactivity so other patrons get a turn at building too.
Stepping Into a Miniature Town
Right next to the house-building area is Role Play Leikkimokki, a self-contained town where children can step into different roles and engage with one another.
- The florist shop is stocked with soft felt flowers and paper wraps for bouquet-making.
- The burger shop lets children assemble burgers with individual felt pieces—buns, patties, veggies—and even fabric French fries.
- Other storefronts include a grocery store, post office, and bakery, all thoughtfully designed to feel realistic.
Children can role-play with others, barter, or simply explore the shops solo. This town setup encouraged our children to stay engaged and imagine themselves “adulting” in their own little world.
Spacious and Diverse Play Zones
Covering around 27,500 square feet, Fanpekka has plenty of space for children to explore their themed zones, each catering to different interests and styles of play:
Lasten Ocean: A sea-themed ball pit with blue and white balls, climbing structures, slides, and even a zipline swing.
Lasten Castle: A medieval-themed castle zone complete with costumes and a balloon-filled room for bouncing fun.
Toy Corner: Perfect for open-ended play, with a floor-standing dollhouse, a train track system, construction toys, and a giant Connect 4.
There’s also a reading zone, staff-facilitated puzzle and logic games and interactive screen games for patrons to gather and play against one another.
Role Play Leikkimokki: The pretend-play town described above.
Assembly Leikkimokki: The home-building zone we loved.
Group Games by Play Hosts
Another highlight was the group games organized by the friendly Play Hosts. At designated times, they invite children to join in ice-breaking activities like charades and musical chairs. These short games are a great way to help children warm up and make new friends.
Final Thoughts
Fanpekka isn’t your typical indoor playground. It thoughtfully blends imaginative play, hands-on building, and socialisation, which sets it apart from others.
