Vintage posters of famed Hong Kong movie stars line the wall, neon light signs deck the poster of Hong Kong’s streets, and old-school tiling reminiscent of those often seen in Hong Kong cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style café) fill the space, complete with a retro hair salon chair and bus stop.
It is an immersive dining experience that brings you to a Hong Kong that you would not find, even if you hop on the next plane to the city. Yet, there is something in the casual atmosphere and open space concept accompanied by the upbeat music, that imbues the eatery with a certain charm.
Central to it all is, of course, HEY KEE’s expanded food offerings that introduce its dim sum creations to its menu of signature Hong Kong-style seafood and beverages.
Classic Dim Sum with Creative Twists
Fans of classic dim sums would likely reach for the all-time favourites such as the Hand-Chopped Siew Mai (S$5.80), Black Bean Sauce Pork Ribs (S$5.80) and Char Siew Bun (S$4.80).
The menu also features a selection of inventive new dim sum items, such as the pink Beetroot Shrimp Dumplings (S$5.80) that is infused with the natural juices of beetroot on the skin and had a generous portion of prawn within.
The Ting Zai Boat Porridge (S$13.80) is a comfort food close to the hearts of Cantonese cuisine lovers. Fun trivia to know is that, this well-loved dish is a aptly named after its roots where it was traditionally made by families living on boats in the Guangdong, China, with ingredients sourced from the sea.
The Crispy Mushroom Snails’ (S$6.80) endearing snail-shaped appearance captured the hearts of many ladies and children. It is a deep-fried pastry with a crispy shell and chewy mochi layer inside, filled with creamy mushrooms and tender chicken.
We didn’t really like the Fried Mango Prawn Roll (S$6.80), due to the lacklustre flavours of the mango and the slightly soggy skin, which would likely have been better if we’d eaten it first while it was freshly served alongside the other dishes.
As a special treat, we got to taste the Steamed Kampong Chicken with Aged Chinese Wine (S$33.20) that is coming to the menu soon. We really liked the soft, tender chicken meat that is steamed with Chinese yellow wine. It could be slightly salty on its own, and is best paired with rice.
