For over a hundred years, countless versions of The Nutcracker have been put on stage in the west, yet due to close cultural backgrounds they all share great similarities. In February 2001, the National Ballet of China premiered its own version of The Nutcracker, experimenting a fusion of Chinese culture and western classical ballet music. It tells the intriguing story of a Chinese family celebrating the Chinese Year. With the music of Tchaikovsky, Chinese ballet artists present in this ballet a variety of Chinese folk-customs and charming cultural elements. It is another bold exploration and reflection on the cultural fusion between the East and the West.
