SO MARCH FUN: Get Amazing Ideas for the March School Holidays 2024

-- Story continues below --

COVID-19 has brought upon a new normal – staying home, frequent handwashing, store closures, disrupted enrichment classes and home-based learning once a week (for now). Singapore is not in “total lockdown” mode but many other countries have done so to curb the spread  of COVID-19.

Videos Inspired by the COVID-19 Crisis

The silver lining is that staying home has certainly inspired the most creative families and talented musicians to put up Oscar-worthy performances while in isolation. Apart from the heartwarming “Home” played by Jaz Loh, at Rasa Sentosa, here are some of our favourites:

One Day More by the Marsh Family

This is the last one we are going to do on a lockdown theme, but it felt very apt. And it might be just in time to cheer up some friends and family who have had – or are about to have – birthdays, all by themselves. Decided to include a bit of the intro so that you can see what kind of madness Danielle Marsh and I would be dealing with, if we didn’t occupy them with music making…Hope everyone out there is doing okay.

This hilarious tribute to the Les Miserables has taken on a twist – cancelled football matches, unavailable grocery delivery timings, excessive screen time. The Marsh family of six from Kent, United Kingdom, belts out their grouses. Despite having no music training nor West End training, this excellent spoof will have you laughing. So, when bored, try music-making or your family’s version of a performance!

10 People 1 Metre

Ten People One Metre One Singapore

We answered the nation’s call with a social distancing duet in our own homes. Remote collabo is the new norm! Do your own version of this iconic national song. Lyrics can be found here:

Mr Brown, Singapore’s Blogfather, and Mr Benjamin “Miyagi” Lee have brought some light-heartedness to the COVID-19 situation with a rendition of “10 People 1 Metre”, a parody of the Singapore National Day classic “One People, One Nation, One Singapore”.

Italian Twin Violinists

A pair of talented Italian twin brothers have combined forces to form a charismatic and energised duo. Only 12 years of age, they sure have made full use of time during Italy’s lockdown. Here’s their lovely performance “Vida La Vida” by Cold Play.

Grieg by Arctic Philharmonic

Grieg – Holberg suite, kanantene-style

Kjære venner! Musikerne savner dere.
God fornøyelse!

Musicians have come together virtually to continue what they are great at – Arctic Philharmonic is definitely not hibernating during lockdown. Their beautiful rendition of Greig’s Holberg suite will uplift in moments of despair. Instead of applause, follow their Youtube account for more great music.

Bamberger Symphoniker’s Ode to Joy

Was bringt uns Menschen zusammen, überwindet Grenzen und verbindet uns – in guten, wie in schlechten Zeiten?

Die Musik!

What lights the hearts? What brings us together, overcomes distances and unites us – both in good and challenging times?

It’s music!

A world-class ensemble provides joy in unprecedented times. And who doesn’t love Beethoven?

Bring Him Home by The Barricade Boys

A heartwarming song sung by Broadway talents and the former cast of Les Misérables – The Barricade Boys will make you tear. It was recorded to show appreciation to those working on the frontline amidst the COVID-19 crisis. People with families being isolated or hospitalised will certainly love this touching rendition.

Over the Rainbow by Chino Valley USD Students

Although their performance was cancelled due to school closures, that didn’t stop the students from Chino Hills High Chamber Singers from performing virtually. They each recorded their parts of “Over the Rainbow” from their homes and through technology, came together as a choir to spread hope and cheer.

Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music, COVID-19 version

Missing Maria/Julie Andrews and her singing entourage from The Sound of Music. Well, they are back, with some sound advice.
