Children’s Season at ACM 2019: Enjoy A Quest, Concerts, Dramas, Kids’ Tours, Workshops And More This December Holidays!

Can learning about Asian culture be an exciting experience for kids? You bet! From now till 29 December, little ones can take part in a host of holiday activities inspired by the Asian Civilisations Museum’s intriguing collection of treasures with Children’s Season at ACM 2019.

Embark on a quest to free Mr Dragon from his royal robe, catch interactive lunchtime concerts, watch drama performances based on Asian legends, engage in Mr Dragon-themed craft activities and workshops, go on interactive kids’ tours around the museum… the list, or rather, fun goes on and on.

Mr Dragon’s Great Escape

Mr Dragon’s Great EscapeA highlight of this year-end Children’s Season at ACM is a quest that takes adventurous kids “around the world” to discover the wonder of the Asian Civilisations Museum’s exhibits while completing their mission to save Mr Dragon!

Mr Dragon has been trapped in his robe for more than 100 years, and young ones are tasked to set him free. Starting from an immersive installation at the ACM Lobby, kids will be led to some of the museum’s galleries in search of clues to find Mr Dragon and help him make his great escape!

Mr Dragon’s Great Escape at Asian Civilisations Museum

In the process, these little detectives will be “transported” to China’s port of Canton, India’s River Ganges, and even find themselves going way back in time to the era of the Ming and Qing dynasties!

Don’t forget to pick up the ‘Mr Dragon’s Great Escape’ activity booklet at ACM Lobby on level 1 for this self-guided experience!

Fun-tastic Fridays

Fun-tastic FridaysPart of Children’s Season at ACM 2019, Fun-tastic Fridays are designed to immerse children from 3 to 10 years old in a colourful world of music, drama and art that is inspired by the museum’s precious exhibits.

Craft, Colour, Create!

Craft, Colour, Create!From 12 pm to 5 pm on Fridays, kids can take part in craft activities that reflect the theme of ‘Mr Dragon’s Great Escape’, such as making a kaleidoscope, designing a tote bag and creating a circuit sticker diorama.

Child’s Play! Lunchtime Concerts

Child’s Play! Lunchtime Concerts12.30 pm to 1.30 pm is music appreciation time. Little ones, even those as young as 6 months old, will enjoy the classical music that appeals to both young and old, performed by musical ensembles ranging from a Chinese instrumental trio to a jazz quartet. Kids may even get to try playing the instruments at the end of each concert! How exciting!

Makara Adventure

Makara AdventureAfter the concert, delve right into the legend of the Makara, which means “sea dragon” or “sea monster” in Sanskrit, through an engaging drama performance. Join two explorers as they go in search of the Makara and uncover the secret behind its half-crocodile, half-elephant appearance.

Big Little Treasures

Big Little TreasuresWhat’s a fun way to conduct a tour of the museum for children? Get them treasure hunting from gallery to gallery! From a Makara carved from ancient wood to hand-embroidered rank badges worn by Chinese scholars and a Hong bowl depicting the waterfront scene at the port of Canton, there are many treasures to be found at the Asian Civilisations Museum!

To encourage the little ones to think creatively and critically, Harvard’s Project Zero thinking routines will be used during these interactive tours.

Workshops

Workshops at Asian Civilisations Museum, December 2019Workshops that present learning opportunities centred around the theme of ‘Mr Dragon’s Great Escape’ add another dimension to the Children’s Season at ACM 2019 experience this December.

Bristlebot Dragons (Fully subscribed)

Hands up those who want a pet dragon robot that scurries around on its own! Kids can now create one using simple robotics at the ‘Bristlebot Dragons’ workshop!

The Dramatic Escapade! (Fully subscribed)

The Dramatic Escapade!This movement and dramatic play workshop helps kids to improve their body and spatial awareness while nurturing their imagination through play. The storyline revolves around Mr Dragon escaping from the robe that he has been trapped in, with the help of his friends, Ganesha and Mr Mouse.

Suitable for children aged 4 to 10 

Bee-Bot’s Great Escape!

Children as young as 3 can learn the basics of coding through sequencing and problem-solving skills taught using Bee-Bot, a simple robot! To add to the fun experience, they get to decorate Bee-Bot and programme it to go on an adventure around the museum’s galleries.

Play with Clay! Makara Making

Play with Clay! Makara MakingA sensory experience awaits kids as they explore shapes and colours to create their very own mini Makaras out of clay, then place them on top of music boxes to complete their beautiful mythical keepsakes.

Suitable for children aged 6 to 10 

At the workshops, each child is required to be accompanied by an adult.
