#BuySingLit 2019 is back with more than 80 programmes in March 2019. This year, #BuySingLit, which encourages more people to read locally written literature, has expanded to two weekends, 8 to 10 and 15 to 17 March 2019.

Families with children can look forward to exciting #BuySingLit 2019 programmes based on locally written works. With references to familiar places around Singapore and local languages, these programmes are sure to resonate with local audiences.

Here are some of the exciting programmes, including book-themed outings and interactive story times, that promise two fun-filled weekends for families and children in March.

Hello SingLit! Pop-Up Book Fair & Sherlock Sam Party

Hello SingLit! Pop-Up Book Fair & Sherlock Sam PartyExplore the world of SingLit children’s books at a book fair organised by Woods in the Books at FORUM The Shopping Mall. In addition to meet-the-author sessions on Saturday, 9 March, there will be Sherlock Sam Kahpoh Kids Championships Party on Sunday, 10 March with games and a mystery to solve. Admission to the Sherlock Sam Party is free with every $15 of SingLit books purchased at Woods in the Books or Books Ahoy.

C.L.A.P! Cerita, Lagu, Aktiviti, PerkusiGet immersed into the rhythm of a story at Mini Monsters’ kids programme, C.L.A.P! Cerita, Lagu, Aktiviti, Perkusi. Based on the story “Kaki Kanan Kaki Kiri” (“Left Foot and Right Foot”) from Mini Monster’s Confident Reader Series, children will enjoy a sing-a-long and get to play a percussion instrument while learning the value of teamwork. This session is suitable for children 7 to 9 years old and will be conducted in Malay.

Dare You Dino

Dare You DinoTouch and feel real dinosaur fossils at Dare You Dino, hosted by local authors Amon Chua and Andy Chua. Together, the pair will be sharing their fascination with dinosaurs and how the prehistoric creatures inspired their book series Fossil Finders and Ryan & Rex. There will also be book vouchers to be won and an encounter with a life-sized “dinosaur”.

Singapore Picture Book Carnival

Singapore Picture Book CarnivalSpend an afternoon filled with stories and crafts at the first Singapore Picture Book Carnival. Activities at the carnival include a simultaneous talk-and-storytelling session where parents can hear from a speaker in one room while children take part in a storytelling session in another, parent-child storytelling-and-art sessions and more. The various sessions are conducted in Mandarin and suitable for children as young as four years old. Registration for each session costs $10 which is fully redeemable for books!

Shaping ‘Oops Odelia’

Shaping ‘Oops Odelia’ - BuySingLit 2019Enjoy a storytelling session based on the GRAM’S Learning Centre’s Oops Odelia book My Birthday Cake at Slappy Cakes, The Grandstand. Kids will also get to learn how Odelia, the book’s main character, was illustrated and take part in a hands-on pancake-making session with the book’s illustrator Sann Choo. Tickets are available at $15 per person or $30 a pair.

Rewriting Asian Myths and LegendsAward-winning writer Shi Min will be conducting a workshop for Primary 4 to 6 students on how to create their own Asian myths. The author of Dragonhearted Xie will not only share common patterns in story development but guide participants along in a fun and entertaining manner. This workshop is free but registration is required.

SingLit 好自然 (Celebrating SingLit with Nature)Reconnect with nature and SingLit at the same time at “SingLit 好自然” (“Celebrating SingLit with Nature”). Held amidst the lush surroundings of Bollywood Veggies, this programme fosters an appreciation for the arts among young readers, families, teachers, students, and nature lovers. Activities include a book fair, interactive storytelling, DIY Potting session, children poetry and sketching, farm tour, book fair and more. This programme is conducted in Mandarin.

Children and their families will be able to engage in role plays and story stations during the Malay Book Festival at Wisma Geylang Serai. Legend of Bukit Merah – An Intergenerational AdaptionLegend of Bukit Merah – An Intergenerational Adaption (9 March) is an innovative theatre programme where participants, made up of senior citizens and kindergarten children, will come together to explore the local legend of Redhill.

There will also be performances, workshops and talks, including family-friendly programmes, held as part of Textures 2019 at The Arts House from 8 to 10 March.
