The Burger King Hainanese Tendergrill Chicken Burger and Rendang Burger are the latest fast-food creations with a local twist to hit the counters.
The Hainanese Tendergrill Chicken is Burger King’s tribute to the beloved Hainanese chicken rice found at all food courts and hawker centres in Singapore. It features a grilled chicken thigh patty with ginger sauce. The burger gets served with fresh lettuce, between toasted sesame seed buns.
The Burger King Rendang Burger is also back. The beef version of the burger features two flame-grilled patties topped with rendang sauce and paired with slices of fresh onion. It is served between toasted sesame seed buns.
Burger King Hainanese Tendergrill Chicken Burger
The Hainanese Tendergrill Chicken Burger came wrapped in paper. We were pleasantly surprised to find that it was accompanied by a mini-tub of red, chicken rice-style chilli. In fact, some people argue say that chicken rice is not complete without the accompanying garlic chilli – so having the tub of chilli gave the burger some credibility points.
First, we tried the burger without the chilli.
The chicken thigh patty was very tender. The yellow ginger sauce was smothered on quite generously. The sauce gave the Hainanese Tendergrill Chicken Burger plenty of flavour.
Next, we added on the chicken rice chilli. It tasted sweet and had some heat. We could feel the spiciness lingering on on our lips even after we were done with the burger.
One point we noted about the sauces was that while they definitely brought the iconic flavours of Hainanese chicken rice to the burger, they appeared to be too “watery” for the sesame buns to handle. This resulted in the buns getting soggy from the sauce after a while.
Burger King Rendang Beef Burger
The Burger King Rendang Beef Burger was also served wrapped in paper. There was sufficient rendang sauce to accompany the two patties. In fact, when we peered in between the two patties, we were happy to find the rendang sauce there too.

The rendang sauce was quite aromatic. As it had a thicker consistency than the Hainanese Tendergrill Chicken Burger’s sauce, it did not soak the burger buns. However, we found the sauce to be on the sweet side, but still with a nice spicy kick.
The generous layer of onions added on to the flavour of the Burger King Rendang Beef Burger. Anyone who likes fresh, raw onions will appreciate the boost of flavour it brings.
A chicken version of the Rendang Burger is also available.
