Virtual Reality Coasters are the rage. Combining the thrill of a rollercoaster with the visual trickery of virtual reality, they provide a unique experience for riders. Riders don a VR headset, strap into their seats and get set for a fantastical ride.
Virtual Reality Rollercoasters in the Region
Now, two new Virtual Reality rollercoaster experiences have recently opened in the region, one at LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort and the other at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park.
The Great LEGO Race, LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort
LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort’s new VR coaster, The Great LEGO Race, places riders into the middle of a road race against whacky LEGO mini-figures driving brick-built race cars. These LEGO mini-figures include Pirate Captain, Pharaoh, Surfer Girl, Trendsetter and Wizard.
The three-minute ride is inspired by the way kids play with LEGO toys and is designed to allow riders to enter an imaginary world built entirely out of LEGO bricks. It combines characters with action and storytelling to create a new experience for riders.

The Great Race replaces LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort’s Project X rollercoaster. It can be ridden with or without the VR headset. It is the first VR coaster in any LEGOLAND theme park.
Mine Train, Ocean Park Hong Kong
Mine Train is one of Ocean Park’s iconic rollercoaster rides. Set 85 metres above ground, Mine Train takes riders on a crazy, up-and-down Wild West ride by the sea.
The Ocean Park rollercoaster has been given an update with virtual reality headsets that allow riders to journey through the rainforest, along raging rivers and encounter animals living in the Amazon rainforest. The Mine Train VR headset experience at Ocean Park Hong Kong is only available for persons above 13 years old.
The VR experiences at both The Great LEGO Race at LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort and Mine Train at Ocean Park Hong Kong make use of Samsung Gear VR device.
