The Art of the Brush

Japanese calligraphy has evolved into an art form that celebrates the beauty of written characters. Using brush and ink, years of discipline and study are required to perfect the technique required to produce a seemingly simple piece of art.

If that all sounds very Zen, it is because it is.

And you can see this art form in person at the Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition. With activities and workshops planned in conjunction with the exhibition, visitors can expect more than just artworks alone at this free event.

Here are 5 reasons why the upcoming Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition is more than your usual art show.

1. First Time the Japan Calligraphy Art Academy is Exhibiting in Singapore

The Japan Calligraphy Art Academy or Nihon Shodo Bijutsuin is one of the oldest calligraphy art institutes in Japan. With more than 70 years of history, their members are master calligraphers and promoters of this traditional art form.

The upcoming Japanese Calligraphy exhibition will be the first time they are holding an exhibition in Singapore. The opening ceremony for the exhibition will take place on 20 October and all are welcomed to view the Japanese calligraphy art on display.

2. Cultural Immersion Through the Largest Display of Japanese Calligraphy Art Locally

The Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition will feature around 60 masterpieces created by members of the Japan Calligraphy Art Academy. These works of art fall into four categories – characters symbolising an idea (kanji), characters representing syllables (kana), new calligraphic art and seal carving. By highlighting this traditional art form, organisers aim to promote stronger ties between Singapore and Japan through cultural exchange.

Visitors will not only have a chance to view the works of art but to see artists in action too.

Visiting calligraphers from the Japan Calligraphy Art Academy will be staging energetic demonstrations of how Japanese calligraphy is created. There will also be exciting opportunities for visitors to learn from these calligraphers and try creating their own art pieces too.

Calligraphy performances will be held from 2 pm to 3 pm daily, except on 25 October. All activities are free but spaces for the calligraphy trial are limited.

4. Heartland Activities on Japan Cultural Workshop Day

Saturday, 21 October, has been earmarked as Japan Cultural Workshop Day. On this day, a series of activities will be held to bring Japanese calligraphy and culture to the heartlands.
