Geylang Serai’s Hari Raya Light Up 2014

With Hari Raya Puasa and the month of Ramadan starting on 29 June 2014, Geylang Serai area is now lighted up with a beautiful display of lights.

This year, the Hari Raya Light Up 2014 committee, headed by Advisers Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Manpower, and Associate Professor Fatimah Lateef, Adviser to Marine Parade GROs (Geylang Serai Division), decided to take this opportunity to deepen the understanding of the significance of Ramadan and Hari Raya Puasa and foster the spirit and idea of religious harmony and tolerance. Key themes include the Dynamic Spirit of Gotong Royong (A Malay expression to describe cohesiveness towards the betterment of a community), the Rich History of Geylang Serai, a Vibrant Culture and Community and the Religious Significance of the Hari Raya Celebrations.

Events planned include Dikir Barat performances, an art form which presents stories on life, education and histories in a poetic way, and demonstrations of traditional Malay games such as Gasing (Tops), Batu Serembat (five stones), layang layang & wau bulan (a traditional kite originally from Kelantan, Malaysia), Congkak, Sepak Takraw, Chapteh & Goli (marbles).

A Cultural Discovery Race will also be held to provide participants with a better understand the history and significance of Ramadan as well as Hari Raya Puasa through fun and interactive activities.

The month-long Hari Raya Light-up 2014 was officially launched on 27 June 2014 at Jalan Engku Aman at Geylang Serai. Guest-of-Honour Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong graced the occasion which was also hosted by Associate Professor Fatimah Lateef, Adviser to Marine Parade GROs (Geylang Serai Division) and the adviser for Hari Raya Light Up 2014 committee. The launch saw more than 500 people in celebration, which included residents of Geylang Serai and Kembangan-Chai Chee, who were then also invited to be on board the bus with Mr Goh and Dr Fatimah.
