Spend a Day at the Zoo and Learn Creative Chinese Writing

Zoo

Creative writing is not something usually associated with the Zoo, but perhaps that’s what makes the collaboration between Wildlife Reserves Singapore and the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language appropriately creative.

On Saturday, 9 November 2013, head down to the Singapore Zoo to take part in a programme where children can learn creative Chinese writing with the Zoo as a source of inspiration.

Organised in conjunction with the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language’s National Story Writing Competition 2013, children can listen to interesting stories about well-loved zoo personalities such as Ah Meng the orang utan, Omar the white tiger and Anusha the elephant matriarch. They will be treated to an exclusive guided tour of the Zoo and can take part in a parent-and-child drawing-story activity.

For the drawing-story activity, children can choose any part of the Zoo as inspiration to draw a picture. Thereafter, parents can help their children prepare a story abstract, in either English or Mandarin, based on the drawing. All participants who submit their drawing-story by 4pm on Saturday will receive a gift pack that contains an assortment of goodies including a Giant Panda special edition of Wildlife Wonders.

Interested participants can also choose to submit the completed story online at the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language website for the National Story Writing Competition 2013. Each parent-child pair that successfully submits an entry online will receive a set of Parent-Child Admission Tickets (comprising two tickets) to the Jurong Bird Park.

Registration for the Creative Writing Session programme starts at 8.30 am at the Singapore Zoo Auditorium. The programme is conducted free of charge but Zoo admission charges apply.

Recommended ages for participation in the Creative Writing Session are 5 to 12 years old. Pre-registration is recommended as spaces are limited. Interested participants can register online atchinesehub.scci.sg to secure a place in the session.

For more information, visit the Singapore Zoo website or register at the National Story Writing Competition 2013 website.
