Editor’s Blog: How You Can Make Earth Day Meaningful

Quote

Earth Day is just around the corner on Monday, 22 April.

Increasingly, schools and kindergartens are incorporating lessons about the 3Rs and the importance of conservation into their curriculum. Has your child done a project on recycling recently? Or is he or she being taught about the need to reduce the use of plastic bags? Perhaps, he or she may even be a Green Ambassador helping to promote the green message among their friends.

As parents, we too can play our part to reinforce the lessons of conservation. Furthermore, conservation need not only be confined to the environment. It can also be extended to the conservation of our heritage. This is especially true in Singapore where our heritage gets lost amongst tall skyscrapers that seem to pop up every week.

One of the best ways to reinforce lessons is to drop small and simple doses in everyday conversations. So whether it is about the need to care for the environment or the need to appreciate our past, why not see how you can have a “conservation conversation” with your young ones this week?

Hopefully, this will help this Earth Day be a little bit more meaningful for both you and your child.
